Zustand: G. Woodcuts by Clare Leighton (illustrator). 1st ed (H-E). Green binding, gilt lettering, some fading to edges and spine, owner name ft endpaper. An thence 2,000 miles along the forests of the Amazon and Madeira rivers to the San Antonio Falls; afterwards returning to Barbados for orders, and going by way of Jamaica to Tampa in Florida, where she loaded for home, done in the years 1909 and 1910.

First published in 1912, this is a revised edition that comes with 16 woodcuts by Clare Leighton and a foreword by the author. Original green cloth, gilt titles to spine. Unclipped dust-wrapper. VG+ [slight rubbing to the edges of the book itself) in a Good+ wrapper that is showing some discolouration, darkening to the spine, and shallow chipping to the edges, spine-ends and corners. Internally excellent; some spotting to the endpapers and outer page-edges. An attractive example.

A British-American artist, writer and illustrator, Clare Leighton (1898-1989) was best known for her wood engravings, which can be found in numerous books, including Thomas Hardy's The Return of the Native (1929) and Thornton Wilder's The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929).
