Hardbound. Zustand: Very Good. Reprint Edition. Description: Dust jacket design by Cissy Bruce. From the publisher's blurb: '''To me preaching was a necessity of my being. I felt it as something wonderful that I was allowed to address a congregation every Sunday about the deepest questions of life.'' In these words Albert Schweitzer recalled his early formative ministry at the Church of St. Nicolai in Strasbourg, where he delivered these sermons. Dr. Schweitzer occasionally remarked that he preached not as a theologian but as a layman. With extraordinary penetration, he grapples with the ageless questions of the human heart - the purpose of life, the meaning of death, the uses of suffering. While his basic concern is with the souls of his listeners, a proximity and relationship with Jesus Christ glows through his words like a hidden fire.'' BINDING/CONDITION: blue cloth; with gilt spine text; a Very Good book, with a Good dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact. 8vo (8.25 inches tall). 153 pages.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Printed in the U.S.A. Date on the title page. Third Printing, stated. Editor's Foreword, Index of Biblical References; 190 pages. The red cloth is excellent, with just a touch of rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends; silver lettering is bright on the spine and upper board. The interior is fresh and bright, but not completely clean---NOTE that my philosopher-father left penciling on about a dozen pages. The original printed dust jacket is unclipped ($3.25) but has rubbing at the extremities, a few small tears, and sunning on the spine; all text is still legible. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] "There is hardly one of us who has not known what it is to be betrayed. We used to find the figure of Judas an enigma, but now we know him only too well. The air we breathe is so infested with mistrust that it almost chokes us. But where we have managed to pierce through this layer of mistrust we have discovered a confidence scarce dreamed of hitherto. Where we do trust we have learned to entrust our very lives to the hands of others. § Trust will always be one of the greatest, rarest and happiest blessings of social life, though it can only emerge on the dark background of a necessary mistrust. We have learnt never to trust a scoundrel an inch, but to give ourselves to the trustworthy without reserve." (Page 22.) As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
