Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Very good, with a page of introductions and a page of 46 paintings listed, along with, usefully, prices in guineas. The front cover has a large raised plate with an arresting colour self portrait of Tretchikoff the artist. Raised plate is slight creased but the condition overall is very good. Date 1960 printed in small writing on the back cover. Many now famous paintings are listed. One of the more scarce exhibition catalogues of this artist's work.

The book is clean and free from any internal markings or inscriptions and shows only light signs of wear, with pushing to head and tail of the spine. Tretchikoff has signed the inside front stiff marbled card board by hand and hand dated his signature 20-12-52, the year of publication in 1952. The final raised plate, called Blue Monday and featuring the artist slumped with his easel, is also hand signed and inscribed: " To my dearest friend Peggy, and cut throat enemy in canasta. V. Tretchikoff 20.12.52". . Near fine excellent condition with all 12 raised plates including the self portrait on the folder cover. In marbled card stiff covers. Dust jacket is a wrap around folder cover, which is missing the front flaps but has gilt title and raised plate illustration on front and fully intact. As issued with the spiral binding. Signed and inscribed to Peggy ( Margaret) Roscoe who after her Cape Town years lived near Hartley, Southern Rhodesia ( now Chegutu, Zimbabwe ), but socialised with Tretchikoff on numerous occasions, including canasta sessions with him and his wife at their splendid mansion in Bishopscourt, Cape Town. Her iconic painting by Tretchikoff called Crawfish Seller which she bought prior to 1952, was later exhibited in Durban with her permission in 1959, and became one of the subjects of the artist's many and profuse lithographic reproductions, all iconic monuments to mid century "kitsch". She later made a Christmas card of her painting on a raised plate, a scarce original of which was also for sale by us at the time of listing but was then sold by us. The price has been reduced to less than $28 per full page raised plate and $56 for the signed and inscribed plate, what a bargain! Would frame beautifully. Vladimir Grigoryevich Tretchikoff was an artist whose painting Chinese Girl, popularly known as The Green Lady, is one of the best-selling art prints of the twentieth century. Tretchikoff was a self-taught artist who painted realistic figures, portraits, still life, and animals, with subjects often inspired by his early life in China, Singapore and Indonesia, and later life in South Africa. While his work was immensely popular with the general public, it is often seen by art critics as the epitome of kitsch (indeed, he was nicknamed the "King of Kitsch"). He worked in oil, watercolour, ink, charcoal and pencil but is best known for those works turned into reproduction prints. According to his biographer Boris Gorelik, writing in Incredible Tretchikoff, the reproductions were so popular that it was rumoured that Tretchikoff was the world's richest artist after Picasso.
