Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Jacket and illustrations by Anton Lock (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in 1943, this is a third impression of 1944. Some slight edge wear, chipping and creasing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, small loss to top and bottom of spine, corners rubbed with small loss, some slight overall time staining, but overall jacket bright and unsunned. Not price clipped (10s 6d), no inscriptions, an old menu from 'The Grand Hotel Torquay' tipped in as a bookmark, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 197pp, illustrated. This remarkable book recounts the extraordinary journey made by the most influential Long Rider of the 20th century. In 1925 Swiss born, Argentine professor, writer, and adventurer Aimé Tschiffely (1895-1954), set off to ride from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to New York City. The legendary 10,000 mile journey took him through mountains, jungles and swamps where he encountered rope bridges, vampire bats, sand storms, quicksand and hostile natives. After two harrowing years he was accorded a ticker tape parade when he rode triumphantly through the streets of New York. This amazing story is narrated by the two equine heroes, criollo horses Mancha and Gato, who accompanied the author. Though nearly a century has passed since the trio set off on their journey, their story has become a celebrated classic. Amply illustrated with drawings by Anton Lock and photographs by the author, this is a book for all lovers of horses, for all lovers of travel and for all lovers of adventure. Quite a scarce book.

The card is printed in brown ink on one side of an 18 x 13 cm piece of thin beige card. An 8.5 x 6 cm black and white photograph has been tipped in within a printed square. In fair condition, with signs of age and wear. The text, in capitals, reads 'Santa Claus in Patagonia. | [Photograph.] | With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year from Mr. & Mrs. A. F. Tschiffely. | 1938 - 1939.' The photograph shows the supposed subject of the card, a Patagonian native with white hair and beard, in morth-eaten jumper, clutching a bottle of Bols as he stares at the camera.
