Dated 1889 on the copyright page, but no date on the title page. Prize inscription on first blank, dated 1892. A fair copy in cream boards, titled and illustrated in red and black. Both inner hinges broken, but holding; considerable wear to extremities and along outer hinges; about 3/4 inch missing from both spine ends; smudge to front endpaper; toning to boards. The book is complete, however, and internally fine.

Kemble. Some of the images are a bit questionable by today's standards. Joel Chandler Harris created the fictional narrator Uncle Remus, whose stories were intended to depict the struggles of plantation life in the American South, so that makes a certain amount of sense, but does not make them any less problematic. A number of Uncle Remus stories have inspired adaptations to film and television, including Walt Disney's 1946 'Song of the South.'
