Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Hildegard Woodward (illustrator). Reprint. Based on the actual experience of the author, a Russian-American pediatrician, this story about adoption was first published in 1939. (Another of Dr Wasson's achievements was being instrumental in introducing psychedelic mushrooms to America, but that's a different story.) This copy is a ninth printing of the new revised and illustrated edition of 1950. Foreword by Sophie Van S. Theis. Full page illustrations are in black & white and three-color on alternate pages. The very edge of the boards are slightly bleached of the lovely green color, but a very good copy indeed in a very good, unclipped ($2.85) dust jacket, slightly browned and edgeworn with some nicks and chips to bottom edge.

"This book is addressed to those who love mushrooms, who love the whole rich world of wild mushrooms in the same way that many love the flowers of the field and the birds of the air." "Our essays began as a mere footnote on the gentle art of mushroom-knowing as practiced by the northern Slavs. - a footnote in a larger work that was to have dealt with the Russians and their food. The footnote grew, and rose in status to a place in the body of the text, and then mushroomed into a whole chapter, and finally one chapter by fission made five. The manuscript has burst all its seams through successive revisions." illus. Mushroom Stones Of Middle America fold-out, bk.pkt. Vol. II Only.

First Edition. First edition. Signed by both Robert Gordon Wasson and Valentina Pavlovna Wasson on the half title, inscribed to former owners in the year of publication, May 18, 1957. Copy 315 of 510 numbered copies. xxi, [1], 212, [4]; xii, [213]- 433, [3] pp. With eighty-two full pages plates and three vignettes. Twenty-six of the plates are watercolors of mushrooms by Jean Henri Fabri. The remaining collotypes were printed by Fratelli Alinari. Fold-out chart in rear pocket. All plates with captioned tissue guards. Two folio volumes bound in publisher's green cloth with crimson spine labels, lettered in gilt with gilt topstain. Near Fine with light foxing to cloth and edges, in a Very Good+, slightly soiled slipcase. Volumes in original protective glassine jackets that are missing large chips and wrinkled. An excellent set of this attractive, profusely-illustrated examination of mycology and mushrooms in world history. It includes the famous first appearance (later reprinted in a diluted form in Life magazine) of the Wasson's first encounter with Maria Sabina and their first experience with psilocybine. Their account inspired Timothy Leary and many others to try psychedelic mushrooms. A seminal book in the search for alternate realities.
