It's a great issue with selections from contemporary li…terary lions, and luminaries from the world of Art. Of special interest in this issue is a reproduction of an early painting by Francis Bacon, (reproduced in black-and-white), included in the "Paintings from Recent Exhibitions" section. The painting titled "Head" is a very early effort by Bacon, possibly the first in the series of "Heads", and one sees his distinctive style coalescing in this unsettling picture. Internally there is quite a lot of page creasing, and the paper has got wet at some stage, and some of the pages are wrinkled as a result (please see scans). During the Second World War, in 1940, with New Writing's future uncertain, John Lehmann wrote New Writing in Europe which was published by Penguin Books, a critical summary of the writers of the 1930s. ***Allen Lane of Penguin Books managed to secure paper for a new series which became Penguin New Writing, a monthly book-magazine, this time produced as a paperback. Penguin New Writing ran to 40 issues in total, surviving until 1950. ***First impression of the true first edition of John Lehmann's Penguin New Writing Issue 30, published in 1947. A very nice clean copy - of interest to collectors of collectable Penguin paperbacks.
