It's a great issue with selections from contemporary literary lions, and luminaries from the world of Art. Of special interest in this issue is a reproduction of an early painting by Francis Bacon, (reproduced in black-and-white), included in the "Paintings from Recent Exhibitions" section. The painting titled "Head" is a very early effort by Bacon, possibly the first in the series of "Heads", and one sees his distinctive style coalescing in this unsettling picture. It is significant as a marker in Bacon's career. (See picture provided). This inclusion is what elevates the book's value. Other artists whose works are depicted are Edward Burra, Massimo Campigli, Keith Vaughan, Wyndham Lewis, Robert Colquhoun, and Robert McBryde. In the pictorial section there are also photographic stills from stage productions of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon, including plays produced by Anthony Quayle and John Gielgud. there are also costume designs shown by James Bailey and Edward Carrick. With colour and photogravure illustrations, including work by Ceri Richards, Edward Burra, Keith Vaughan, Graham Sutherland et al. ***A good only reading copy in colour-illustrated thin card covers. The covers show some rubbing and creasing commensurate with age and handling, with a couple of deep creases to the front cover. Spine edges rubbed with some surface loss. No actual loss to the fragile spine covering. Paper stock lightly tanned as usual, with heavier tanning to the page block edges. Internally there is quite a lot of page creasing, and the paper has got wet at some stage, and some of the pages are wrinkled as a result (please see scans). Vaughan belonged to the Neo-Romantic group of landscape painters that included Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland. Much troubled by his homosexuality, he began a diary in 1939, 'faced at the age of twenty-seven with what then seemed the likelihood of imminent extinction before I had properly got started'; and he would write until his suicide in 1977. Editor Alan Ross hails Vaughan's Journals as 'a self-portrait of astonishing honesty: devoid of disguise in any shape or form, or hypocrisy'. The earlier entries, covering the war years and his period of greatest creativity in the 1940s and 1950s, 'are revealing for the light they shed on a painter's character and, to a lesser extent, working methods'. The later pages chronicle 'a descent into hell . . . redeemed by their frankness, spleen and dry humour'. This edition reproduces the amplified version of the Journals that was first published in 1989.…
