Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 8vo. 71p. Profusely illustrated with 20 black and white captioned photos and one black and white map. Yellow wrappers with a brown and white photo on the front cover and yellow letters on the cover and the spine. Small black and white photo of the author on the rear panel. Just touches of wear to the extremities, covers clean and bright, all photos and map in fine condition, small rubbed spot on the rear panel, else fine with no internal markings. This is a series of sketches of the Kern River Valley over the past century. It includes narrative on the mines--of the Big Blue, discovered by a Cherokee Indian, Lovely Rogers, and his mule. Other vignettes describe early houses, tell of the pioneer families, of the gunfights, the dance hall girl and the Chinese miners, as only a native son of the valley could express this lore. " Adis M. Walker was born in the old mining camp of Keysville around the turn of the century. A descendant of two of the oldest pioneer families of California, the study of the history of his native state has been a life long interest. He left Kern River Valley to study electrical engineering, graduating from USC with honors, then went east to follow his profession. But the call of the Kern was too great and he returned to Kernsville in the mid '30s. Devoting himself to his two major interests, writing and conservation, he has become well known in both fields. Walker was one of the founders of the Kern County Museum and has served for several terms on the Board of Directors. He has served twice as president of the Kern County Historical Society and once for the Death Valley 49ers. He also served a term as a member of the Kern County Board of Supervisors. Recently he has devoted much time to the problem of the Kern Plateau Wilderness, a pressing conservation situation. His writings include "Sierra Prologue" and "Francisco Garces--Pioneer Padre of the Kern." [from the rear panel] This is a must have for anybody interested in Kern County or the Kern River Valley and written by an expert historian.
