The binding is in a reddish-maroon cloth with gilt titles on the spine, probably done a few decades ago. The interior pages are evenly and mildly toned. Square and securely bound -- a solid and attractive copy. ; B&W Illustrations; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 252 pages; Horry's and Weems biography of Marion was first published in 1814. It proved extremely popular and went through many editions and printings.

Front pastedown has surface peeling, ownership inscription dated 1835, and old colored wax pencil writing; missing ffep and perhaps a ffly (fp immediately opposite frontis' blank recto); varied foxing/toning to interior leaves with a few corners creased from fold-ins; old pencil tracings of two coins on rfep verso. Text block remains firm. Book is now presented in a trimmed Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the boards and modestly enhances shelf presence. Sold as is for the book could use a binder's attention. Popular 19th century account of South Carolina Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion which was first published in 1809 but, with Weems' reputation as a mythopoeist, should be perused with some skepticism and, in that regard, bibliographer Wright Howes (U.S.IANA #H650) commented "General Horry furnished the facts, Parson Weems the rhetoric; so much of it that Horry became indignant and disclaimed all connection with the book.".

Unabashed, Weems continued its publication through many editions." A later edition of the biography of Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion, compiled from information supplied by Gen. Peter Horry and written by the famed parson Mason Weems. Marion was a hero of the Revolution, and it was largely due to his actions and strategy that the turning point was reached in the South.

His brillant operations in the Carolinas kept thousands of British troops tied down and contributed immensely to ultimate American victory. Plain and unassuming, he was widely beloved by his contemporaries, and after his death this book began the process of his ascent to legend. Horry, his second-in-command for part of the war, supplied many of the facts, although he was allegedly disgusted by Weems' flowery passages and disclaimed any connection with the book. What he disliked, others embraced, and the book went through many editions. This edition not in Howes or any other standard sources. This copy with the ownership signature and bookplate of J.K.
