Toutefois, c'est en 1945, après avoir choisi non seulement de passer la guerre en France, mais encore d'y avoir été résistant, que Beckett opte véritablement pour cette langue d'adoption. On trouvera d'ailleurs de nombreuses traces de cette période dans En Attendant Godot. L'évocation du Vaucluse (cf. p.86) où Beckett a passé une partie de la guerre en est un des exemples significatifs. Non moins significatif, le titre d'un des premiers écrits français de Beckett: Premier amour (1945). Un peu comme si non seulement le titre, mais également le choix du genre, une nouvelle, venait signifier un renouveau dans une uvre déjà substantielle quoique peu connue encore en anglais. En 1946 Beckett écrit un premier long récit français, le seul à la troisième personne, Mercier et Camier qu'il reniera plus tard "a dreadful book". Les deux vagabonds engagés dans une quête indéfinie et infinie qui évoque celle des héros de Joyce dans Dublin, sont à maints égards les pendants romanesques de Vladimir et Estragon. En 1947 Beckett s'essaie pour la première fois au théâtre dans une pièce encore inédite aujourd'hui Eleuthéria dont pourtant Beckett dira à Colin Duckworth qu'elle est la source du dialogue entre l'enfant et Vladimir. Mais l'année faste c'est 1948. Beckett compose alors les deux premiers romans de sa "trilogie": Molloy, Malone meurt et avant de terminer Malone meurt, En attendant Godot. Cette pièce se trouve en quelque sorte à l'aboutissement de ces romans tout en marquant une rupture. Rupture dans le genre puisque Beckett se fait dramaturge, mais aussi rupture dans le ton de par sa fonction de diversion libératrice. Si le théâtre est un divertissement pour ceux qui y vont, Beckett semble l'avoir considéré comme tel en l'écrivant: "J'ai écrit Godot dans le but de me délasser, d'échapper à la prose terrible (awful) que j'écrivais à cette époque" a pu déclarer Beckett à Duckworth.
