Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Virgil Finlay (interior) (illustrator). First Edition. Kokomo, IN: All-Fiction Field, Inc. [Popular Publications Inc.], 1951. First Edition. July, 1951 issue. One of two interior illustrations is by Virgil Finlay. Octavo, 112 pp. Pages age-toned as always, rubbing, chipping at bottom front cover edge, moderate edgewear elsewhere. Overall, Very Good. See scans. FFM was a relatively long-lived entry in the pulp fiction periodical industry of the era, and, though it did, to a degree, indulge the (now classic) anonymous, semi-lurid, pulchritudinous cover art that was one of the selling points of the field, its included (generally, but not exclusively, later-rights) literature was of the first water within the sibling pulp genres of mystery, fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Most issues included only two to four stories (in fact, whatever it took to end up at about 112 pp.), at least one being of novella to novel length. In this issue, the lead and cover story is H.G. Wells' timeless War of the Worlds, the basis of (among may other renditions), the 2005 Tom Cruise film and Orson Welles' unforgettable 1938 radio-play hoax. The cover illustrating and touting it here shows a dazzling young blonde damsel, fainted dead away among the fieldstones outside her farmhouse, presumably from having caught sight of the approaching sinister Martian machines of death. Not explained, at least on the cover, is why she ran outside in the first place, clad only in a micro-mini slip. By the time of this issue, FFM had begun including illustrations, and there are two full-page illustrations herein, including a magnificent effort by the peerless Virgil Finlay. Also in this issue: Sax Rohmer's Tcheriapin. A peripherally worn but still sturdy exemplar of a generally fragile genre, American pulp fiction. See scans. LT71.
