Grey Cloth Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good to Very Good. First Edition. 1945. First edition. xii, 119pp. Franz Viktor Werfel (1890-1945) was an Austrian-Bohemian novelist, playwright, and poet. He is primarily known as the author of The Forty Days of Musa Dagh (1933), a novel based on events that took place during the Armenian genocide of 1915, and The Song of Bernadette (1941), a novel about the life and visions of the French Catholic saint Bernadette Soubirous, which was made into a Hollywood film of the same name. This volume marks the first appearance of a collection of English translations of his poetry. It contains 49 poems, each with the German original on a facing page. The choice was influenced by the translators personal taste, and was aided by Franz Werfel, who has also provided an introduction. The book is bound in the original grey cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the top of the spine and a small light stain around the bottom front spine corner. The contents are tight and clean with a name written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some light soiling and a small label near the bottom rear edge. Small pieces are missing from the front corners and bottom of the spine with a large piece missing from about 1 1/2" of the top of the spine and the front and rear top edges. There is a tear of about 3" on the top front corner that has been repaired on the reverse with tape. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
