Analytical operations with co-ordinate systems are continually used in differential geometry, a typical process being to 'choose a co-ordinate system such that .' It is therefore natural to state the axioms in terms of an undefined class of 'allowable' co-ordinate systems, and to deduce the properties of the space from the nature of the transformations of co-ordinates permitted by the axioms. These earlier axioms are found to be adequate for the differential geometry of an open simply connected space, the most elementary theorems of which occupy the greater part of Chapters III-V. The more general axioms, in terms of allowable co-ordinate systems and without restrictions on the connectivity of the space, are given in Chapter IV.

Erstausgabe
First Edition, American issue (sticker on front wrapper of London branch of Cambridge University Press as well as Macmillan, New York). ix, 97 pp; figs. Original printed wrappers. Signature on front wrapper (E. Pinney, perhaps Cal-Berkeley scientist Edmund Pinney, b. 1917), else Very Good. Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics. "Soon after Einstein's theory of general relativity appeared Veblen turned his attention to differential geometry. This work led to important applications in relativity theory, and much of his work also found application in atomic physics. His work The invariants of quadratic differential forms (1927) is a systematic treatment of Riemann geometry while his work, written jointly with his student Henry Whitehead, The foundations of differential geometry (1933 -- date is incorrect) gives the first definition of a differentiable manifold" (MacTutor Web site).
