Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Colmer, Roy (front jacket design) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Fine unread condition white boards, red cloth boards, and gold spine lettering contained in a very good condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Authors' Dedications; Acknowledgments; Prologue and Afterword. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. A 1/2 inch repaired closed tear at the upper right edge of the jacket front (see photogrpahs). Signed and inscribed by Maury Wills with black Sharpie on the blank first free front endpaper. (see photographs). "Here is a sports autobiography unlike any you have ever read before. It's got all the inside stuff about the game any baseball fan could ask for; it is also a touching, telling story of a talented black man trying to make his way in a largely white world. But what sets this book apart is Maury Wills' painfully candid admissions of how he sacrificed his family and those who loved him for success on the field, and how, finally, he was forced to pay for his lonely pursuit with a life bereft of all feeling except an uncontrollable need to consume suicidal amounts of cocaine and alcohol. Maury Wills was a brilliant baseball player. In 1962 he electrified the sports world when he stoe 104 bases, breaking Ty Cobb's hallowed record. He was the Dodger team captain, an All-Star, and one of the most popular figures in the game. But no one, even Wills, realized the personal price he was paying for this public acclaim. In On the Run Wills reveals the secrets behind his phenomenal ability to get on base, to steal and score runs. He discloses much about his famous teammates and opponents: Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Tommy and Willie Davis, Steve Carlton, Orlando Cepeda, and Bob Gibson. He also talks, for the first time, about his Hollywood friends and lovers, Doris Day and Edie Adams, and of his so, Bump, who made love to Maury's girlfriend as he stood by helplessly and watched. And, with readable candor, Maury Wills tells of the steep price he paid for his success; his futile search for love, his descent into a cocaine hell, and his courageous fight to beat hs addiction. When Maury Wills stole 104 bases he led the game of baseball to a new level. Now he has done the same for the sports autobiography in a book that is at once charming and terrifying, hilarious, moving, and ultimately - triumphant." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fair. First Edition. 334 pages, illus., Presentation copy inscribed & signed by Maury Wills. DJ edges worn: small tears, small chips missing. Ink inscription inside front flyleaf. Maury Wills paid a heavy price for his success with the Dodgers--addiction to cocaine and alcohol. Maurice Morning "Maury" Wills (born October 2, 1932) is an American former professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 through 1966 and the latter part of 1969 through 1972 as a shortstop and switch-hitter; he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1967 and 1968, and the Montreal Expos the first part of 1969. Wills was an essential component of the Dodgers' championship teams in the mid-1960s, and is credited for reviving the stolen base as part of baseball strategy. Wills was an All-Star for five seasons and seven All-Star Games, and was the first MLB All-Star Game Most Valuable Player in 1962. He also was the National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1962, and a Gold Glove winner in 1961 and 1962. In a fourteen-year career, Wills batted .281 with 20 home runs, 458 runs batted in, 2,134 hits, 1,067 runs, 177 doubles, 71 triples, and 586 stolen bases in 1,942 games. Since 2009, Wills is a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization serving as a representative of the Dodgers Legend Bureau. In 2014, Wills appeared for the first time as a candidate on the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Golden Era Committee election ballot for possible Hall of Fame consideration in 2015 which required 12 votes. Wills missed getting elected by 3 votes. All the other candidates on the ballot also missed being elected. The Committee meets and votes on ten selected candidates from the 1947 to 1972 era every three years.
