Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. "William Shakespeare", a monograph by Hamilton Wright Mabie, popular essayist, editor, and literary critic, was published in 1914 by The Mentor Department of Literature as Serial No. 62. The essay was then bound in a large collection of disparate articles similar to a Sammelband (a collection of essays on disparate subjects). The essay, a stand-alone monograph, was cleanly disbound. It is illustrated with 16 black-and-white illustrations through the text, as well as 6 sepia gravures printed on stiff card stock. The essay is far from being a definitive monograph, because of its brevity, but it touches on some important things and events in Shakespeare's life that may be keys to understanding such splendid artistic dramatic and poetic masterpieces as he penned. Mabie's style is genial and the essay is informative. There are 16 monochrome pictures through the text and six full page sepia gravures, printed on a thicker card stock. The pictures through the text are discussed, and each plate illustration is given a full page explanation. The six full sized sepia gravures are as follows : The room in which William Shakespeare was born; Anne Hathaway's cottage; Shakespeare's house, Stratford; Shakespeare's workroom; the Avon and Stratford Church; Shakespeare's grave in Stratford Church.
