Her parents had read it to her as a child as a follow-up to "A Child's History of the World." She thought it was the most fascinating story she had ever heard. Now that I am a homeschooling parent I have to agree with my friend. The book was written in 1929 by the headmaster of Calvert School, V.M. Hillyer. It has only been updated once in 1951. The author takes you on a railway trip around the world. Throughout the book are illustrations which in my opinion are works of art that add to the story. I am currently reading this book to my 8-year-old child and she loves it! After we have completed this volume we will begin utilizing Calvert's "A Child's Study of Famous Americans, and V.M. Hillyer's "A Child's History of Art" series. As a side note I would encourage parents and teachers who enjoy this volume to contact the Calvert School in Hunt Valley, Maryland to encourage them to reprint this lost classic for future generations to enjoy." - Kathy " Yes, some geography details have changed since the book was written, but a lot of them haven't. And children should know that the world is constantly changing. This is not the last edition of the ever so changing "National Geographic Map of the World", but this book is a very good starting point for learning geography. I read this book to my 9-year-old son, and we both enjoy it. He checks the map, reads over my shoulder, and retells the things he learned from this book to other people; and the word "geography" is not some dull and dusty word for him, it sounds like "an adventure". I have to tell him about some changes, but this makes it even more interesting to him. I got "Children's History of the World" and "Children's History of the Art" by the same author. Rebacked with red cloth similar to the original and with the endpapers strengthened. Covers scuffed and worn. Bookplate of Pamela and Raymond Lister to the front pastedown. New cords. Half Leather. Zustand: Very Good binding. Wright and Buckingham's historical descriptions of various places in Belgium, the Rhine, Italy, Greece, and the Shores and Islands of the Mediterranean, with engraved illustrations by various artists. Complete with two volumes bound in one. Vol. I is complete with all 73 plates called for in the 'Contents,' though "Great Canal, and Antique Gothic House" [or "Ghent"] is bound in at Vol. II, p. 58, and "The City of Catania and Mount Etna" is bound in near Vol. II, p. 152. Vol. II is lacking pp. 25-32, and pp. 49-56, and also lacks the eight plates that would have been in those two signatures. This is quite possibly a binder's error, as there does not appear to be any explicit damage to the textblock at those locations; the binder also misplaces a number of plates, though most of these errors are simply a few pages off. Vol. I with all 73 plates. Vol. II with 73 of the 81 plates. Altogether with 146 of the 154 plates, which includes the frontispieces and additional title pages, engraved. Some foxing to the plates; previous owners' names on the front pastedown and recto of the initial frontispiece lacking front endpaper. Surface wear to the joints, spine, and corners of the boards. Some soiling to the cloth covered boards. Half brown leather with designs in blind, decorative gilt rules, and gilt lettering, and gray cloth covered boards. Very Good. Very Good binding.
