Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Second edition, December 18, 1916; original copyright November 28, 1916. 16mo. (19 cm.) unpaged [ca. 64p.]. Sewn booklet in lapping grey wrappers printed in black and with a pastedown on the front cover in black and white of a man sitting in a chair in front of a fireplace leaning on his cane, which image is repeated in a tipped on illustration to p. 6 and appears to bear the initials J.J. in the lower righthand corner. Also a black and white photo of a woman sitting in a chair (presumably his grandmother) further into the volume. Numerous engravings in light green throughout, often as tailpieces. Title page decorated with an hourglass in black and green. Quite a few dings around the lapping edges, a thumb-sized piece missing from the leading edge of the rear wrapper, wrappers soiled and spotted, occasional foxing in the textblock, cover pastedown somewhat rubbed, interior illustrations fine, a couple of corrections to the text in pencil, else very good to near fine with no other internal markings. Jacob William Wright (1871-1952) was born in Waterton, Wisconsin, whose grandfather, Jacob VanAlstine, ran the Exchange Hotel in town. The "Long Ago" memorializes the author's youth, much of which was spent in the company of his grandparents in Jacob Van Alstine's Exchange Hotel. After graduating from Beloit College, Wright went on to a career as a journalist (in Denver and Pasadena), author, and poet. Mary Van Alstine Wright, his mother (1848- ) was a landscape painter; but I have been unable to determine if she did any of the illustrations for this book. Wright was also the author of "The glad World and Other Songs" (1919). The book offered here was republished by the Van Alystne Co., Pasadena, CA, in 1921.
