BARBARIANS AT THE GATES is a fast-paced dystopian novella set in the fictional City of Alta, where the ultimate commodity-clean, breathable air-is hoarded by the elite. The prestigious Veridian University is the epicenter of this inequality, operating the towering Regional Air Cleaning System (RACS) that creates an exclusive bubble of filtered air, while the surrounding, poverty-stricken Lower District of Matala chokes in perpetual smog. The story unfolds through three alternating perspectives, each grappling with the moral and physical toll of this air-based apartheid: Tim, a sociology professor at Veridian, lives inside the RACS bubble. He is a morally conflicted witness who futilely attempts to implement small community outreach programs, only to be blocked by the Dean, who cites "setting a precedent" as too great a security risk. As he observes the daily desperation of the "barbarians" at the gates, Tim slowly realizes that his own inaction and the institution's selfish preservation make the elite the true oppressors.Sonia is a descendant of the old Alta elite, whose family owns and profits from the dilapidated tenements in Matala. She is trapped by family loyalty and the fear of ruin, observing from her historic mansion as the neighborhood teeters on the edge of revolt. Her attempts to persuade her mother to push for social change are dismissed as "sentimental folly," leaving her helpless as the city government's plan to demolish the slum ignites the inevitable clash.Mark is the revolutionary leader from Matala. As a lifelong asthma sufferer whose livelihood is constantly threatened by the toxic air, the struggle is literally one of life and death. When the City announces the demolition of the last inner-city slum, Mark organizes a disciplined, desperate revolt. His target is not looting or violence, but the RACS tower itself-the unyielding symbol of their oppression. The novella escalates to a climactic, coordinated attack where the Matala residents overwhelm the university's hastily fortified security forces. Mark and his team successfully breach the campus and destroy the RACS filtration tower, causing the clean-air bubble to collapse. The destruction forces a sharing of misfortune: the thick, polluted air immediately flows into the campus, making the elite and the slum dwellers breathe the same atmosphere. In the aftermath, the riot gives way to a tense negotiation. With the world watching and the university's symbol of privilege in ruins, the city government is forced to sit down with Mark and the residents of Matala. The gentrification is delayed, and a path toward shared accountability, demanded not through begging but through revolutionary force, finally opens. Tim, observing the negotiation, concludes that the "barbarians" at the gates were not looking to destroy civilization, but to be included in it, forcing a radical change in the social order for the right to simply thrive. Hu and Lovrich introduce the "electronic community-oriented policing (E-COP)," concept to explore how social media can impact police strategies on improving and maintaining police-public relation. Using empirical evidence and theoretical foundations, this book demonstrates the importance of this timely refinement to traditional community-oriented policing strategies as we move further into the twentieth century. E-COP represents a systematic approach to policing that applies knowledge derived from theories of individual behavior, social behavior, and mass communication dynamics to contemporary policing practice. This book would be of interest to policing researchers, scholars, and students as well as police practitioners wishing to improve their use of social media resources to connect to the public they serve in the digital age.…

Discussing social media-related scholarship found in criminology, legal studies, policing, courts, corrections, victimization, and crime prevention, this book presents the current state of our knowledge on the impact of social media and the major sociological frameworks employed to study the U.S. justice system.Building a theoretical framework for the study of social media and criminal justice in each chapter, the chapters provide a systematic reflection of extant research on social media in cybercrime, operations of courts, administration of institutional and community corrections, law enforcement, and crime prevention. The book fills the gap between the contemporary state of knowledge regarding social media and criminal justice with respect to both empirical evidence and types of sociological frameworks being employed to explore and identify the societal costs and benefits of our growing dependence upon social media. In addition to providing an up-to-date overview of our current state of knowledge, this book highlights important areas of future research, wherein the benefits of social media can be expanded and the negative aspects of its broadening use can be minimized.Social Media and Criminal Justice will be of interest to students, scholars and practitioners in the areas of judicial administration, corrections management, law enforcement, and criminal justice-engaged community-based nonprofit organizations involved in court-referred treatment and/or active collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.…
