Zustand: Collectible. FIRST. nFINE. White and Blue cloth boards. Top edge gilt, some spotting on covers, gilt titles are bright. Brief neat 1896 gift inscription on ffep about Evanston Illinois written/initialled by Laura Hayes - her married initials. Very scarce/personal to the Exposition as signed. Well illustrated. This book went into several printings, with differing bindings, This one is the original higher grade two color binding. Typical weak inner paper hinging of front and rear boards, but hinges tight. The three authors came to Chicago to work on preparations for the Columbian Exposition. Hayes was Bertha Palmer's private secretary, Loughborough was a file clerk and general aide in Palmer's office, and Yandell was a sculptor working on decorating the Woman's Building. This little book, part fiction, part fact, is their story of life in Chicago and a first hand account of preparations for the Fair. It has become quite rare and is a special account of women's contributions to the important 1892 Columbian World's Fair Exposition. Enid Yandell (1870-1934) was an American sculptor who studied with Auguste Rodin and Frederick William MacMonnies. She was a prolific sculptor creating numerous portraits, garden pieces and small works as well as public monuments. In addition to her work as an artist, she was committed to improving the lives of others. She contributed to the education of future artists by founding the Branstock School in Massachusetts, in 1908. During World War I, Enid Yandell became involved with the Red Cross and with a French organization for the care of war orphans. For a discussion of Laura Hayes's role in the planning and execution of fair activities, see Weimann, "The Fair Women". [B90-222]. Signed by Author.
