Drawing on the rich archives available, this book examines the fundamental geographical and historical factors that shaped the geopolitical crystallization of this new State. Iraq's geostrategic location wa…s key, as it lay in a shatterbelt zone of clashing powers and political ideologies. This location invited the attentions of competing world powers. Many resultant features filtered into the new State. Clashes between various communal identities, themselves a reflection of Iraq's geostrategic position, presented severe challenges to Iraqi consolidation. So too did the imperial ambitions of Britain, which was still trying to secure its own interests in the region. Despite new Wilsonian principles of self-determination, Britain gained the Iraqi mandate and backed the narrow strand of nationalism represented by the Sunni Arab elite. With such a limited indigenous support base, this Arab administration remained dependent upon Britain. This exacerbated ethnic and religious divisions, creating a dangerously unbalanced State. Such unequal access to power was reinforced by the clustered geographical distribution of the major ethnic and religious groups. This book offers a thorough analysis.

Some wear mainly to the edges, and a few marks to the boards, plus a small repair to the top… inner edge of the spine, but all complete and sound, no major damage, Very good for age and being a charming children's book, more often found is very used/poor condition. Pictorial endpapers in blue/white of a rabbit and a little girl. A full page colour frontispiece and seven other full page colour plates, plus numerous black-and-white illustrations throughout. On the second front free blank endpaper Is stuck an ORIGINAL hand drawn pen and ink sketch of Mr Rabbit (I assume) looking out over the field towards a distant hunter. At the foot/right side of the drawing is an Inscription "With Compts" from George Howard Vyse April 1913. Also at the top left side of the adhered drawing, but on the actual endpaper, is another Inscription in the same hand = With the Compts of one of the ' collaborators ' (not sure of that last word? ). Internally clean and tight, with no further inscriptions or marks. A delightful 'bunny' book with charming illustrations, and the added attraction of an ORIGINAL Drawing by one of the Artists.
