Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. An accessible survey of the dramatic advances in optics during the twentieth century, written for the general reader by physicist Samuel Tolansky. Beginning with the historical development of theories of light, Tolansky discusses newer instruments, experimental techniques, and applications of optics in astronomy, microscopy, crystallography, metallurgy, precision engineering, biology, and modern physics. The presentation avoids mathematical formulas while explaining both the practical and theoretical importance of optical science. First edition, published as Pelican Original A969 in 1968. Illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates. The striking front-cover micrographs and cover photographs are credited to Tolansky himself. Bibliographic references describe the volume as 222 numbered pages with 12 pages of photographic plates. Condition: Good. Original illustrated wrappers show substantial rubbing, surface scratching, creasing, and edge wear. Corners and spine extremities are worn, with small chips and shallow losses along the upper edge and corners. Pronounced creasing is present across the lower portion of the front cover, with additional creasing and scuffing to the rear cover. Interior paper is evenly age-toned. Title and copyright pages shown are clean, with no ownership markings visible. A complete, serviceable reading copy with an appealing period Pelican cover. Samuel Tolansky was a prominent British physicist and specialist in optics and interferometry who served as Head of Physics at Royal Holloway. He later participated in research involving lunar material returned by Apollo 11. The book has interest for collectors of optics, popular science, Penguin and Pelican paperbacks, and mid-century scientific design. The book will be carefully wrapped and shipped in protective packaging. Orders are normally shipped promptly, and returns are accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policies. SCI 2a.
