DESCRIPTION - Is art on the way out? Hegel thought so at the beginning of the last century; likewise Thomas Love Peacock, one of the most inartistic of novelists. Thinkers from Plato to Tolstoy, hierarchs Christian and Communist have all called art to heel, trying to harness it between the shafts of state, society or the creed. In Muse and Thinker a professor of philosophy engagingly discusses the age-old antipathy between the 'two cultures', sharpened today as Art flaunts her irresponsible intuitions and untested insights in the granite face of Science, coldly obsessed with its concept of the 'value-free'. But for Art 'excellence' is all. Three themes run through Professor Gibson's defence of the study of aesthetics: the relation between art and philosophy, the existence of various excellencies (as objective constituents) in real works of art, and the paradoxical capacity of art to be a part of this world and yet inhabit a world of its own. He concludes that there is a place for art and a place for science.
