Sub-titled "Stained Glass Windows in New Zealand Houses" this study was initiated at a time when including these elements of architectural design and decoration was undergoing something of a renaissance and becoming recognised as an art-form renewal. Most of the early examples the authors discovered dated back to the late 1890s, when the art-form was relatively widespread in quality homes. They adopted a chronoligical sequence of division for the book with six chapters --- the Victoria era 1891-1905, the Edwardian 1901-10, Art nouveau 1905-20, Art deco 1920-40, the pictorial tradition 1900-40 and modern revival 1970-). An opening chapter describes the authors' methods of locating examples for inclusion in the book and experiences encounterd on the trail, with a general overview of the topic. Many of these "discoveries" provided the magnigicent selection of full colour potographs that illustrate "In the Light of the Past." Outstanding coverage of a subject which attracted little in the way of published material expressly recording the NZ stained glass experience before the revival of the art-form about the 1970s.
