The authors examine competing theories in both industrialized and developing country settings to consider how demographic change, the development of financialinstitutions, public policy and other economic forces influence the amount, form and timing of intergenerational transfers. This book is concerned with transfers of economic resources between generations. What determines the magnitude and direction of those transfers? What are the respective roles of the family, the private sector, and the government? How do transfers affect demographic behaviour? Inequality? Economic growth? Other aspects of the economy?
