Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First published in 1985' ). Flat-signed by the author, Lisa St Aubin de Terán, on the half-title page (see photo). In 1983 she received an Eric Gregory Award for Poetry, although this is her first published collection. The book h…as 24 illustrations, 16 of them full-page, by the artist Charles Shearer. As you can see from the photos, the red covers are exceptionally clean and basically free of any wear (there's a wrinkle at the top edge of the spine). The edges and corners are in very good shape. The page edges too. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with nicely tight pages throughout. There are no binding issues. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm not seeing any soiling at all. That includes the white inside covers and end papers. I'm also not seeing any creasing. And there are no markings and no attachments of any kind. Finally, with the exception of the author's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. I've conservatively rated the book Near Fine. 'Fine' would also be a fair representation. The dust jacket is in very good condition. There are no tears. There's no staining or soiling. There's light toning at some of the margins, a little wrinkle at the top edge of the spine, and the surface gloss of the covers has bubbled up a bit in a few very thin vertical lines. It's not terribly conspicuous. I'm not sure whether or not the photographs will pick it up. In any event, it is likely the case with all the jackets. The flaps are in very solid shape, very clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. I found only one other signed copy of this book for sale on the Internet. I've priced my copy significantly lower. From the Preface: 'The people in this poem were the workers on the Hacienda el Hatico (the High Place), where I lived for seven years, near Mendoza Fria in Venezuela. The poem is a memorial to those who have died, and a tribute to those who are still living. The notes at the end explain one or two allusions which may be unclear, and the English sense of a few Spanish words. I have used the rhythm syllabic metre of the poem in the hope of reproducing something of the naturalness and formality of the archaic high Spanish of Andean speech.' Lisa St Aubin de Terán (born 2 October 1953) is an English novelist, writer of autobiographical fictions, and memoirist. Her father was the Guyanese writer Jan Carew. In 1982 she published her first novel, Keepers of the House, winning the Somerset Maugham Award and a place on Granta's "Best of Young British Novelists" list. The Slow Train to Milan, winner of the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, followed in 1983. Her work includes further novels and memoirs (including Memory Maps in 2003), short-story collections and poetry. Otto (Virago), a fictionalized biography, was published in 2006. Charles Shearer (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).
