Sir Brian Horrocks was a distinguished British Army officer, best known for commanding XXX Corps during Operation Market Garden in World War II. His military career spanned both World Wars, the Russian Civil War, and the Anglo-Irish War. He was twice taken prisoner and even competed in the modern pentathlon at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Horrocks was highly regarded by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, who considered him one of his most capable officers. He led British forces in North Africa and Europe, but a serious wound in 1943 affected his health and ultimately led to his early retirement. After leaving the army, he became Black Rod in the House of Lords, a television presenter, and an author. In 1985, Horrocks passed away, but in 2022, his ashes were rediscovered and given a proper military burial. His legacy remains strong, with many considering him one of Britain's finest generals.
