It begins in 1698 when the Reverend Thomas Bray donated volumes to the city's Anglican communities and traces the founding of the New York Society Library in 1754. Through extensive research, the author reveals the Bray Foundation's pivotal role in jumpstarting early library development and also sheds light on the Sharpe Collection. Additionally, the book delves into the history of the Millington Bequest, which played a significant role in the establishment of the New York Society Library. The author effectively positions these libraries within the broader context of 18th-century New York and discusses various themes, including the creation of lending libraries, the preservation of books, and access to various kinds of literature.
