A review of legislation reveals the social attitudes and norms of the early years of Florida statehood when the author shows that the codes were based on a mixture of English common law, Spanish civil law, and local customs. With the increase in population came a demand for a more stable and orderly society, which the author contends that the new penal codes were designed to provide. Furthermore, the author discusses the topics of capital punishment, the role of women in society, the status of women before the law, the rights of free people of color, and the legal status of slaves during this period of Florida's history. The book concludes with an analysis of how the legislature's intent changed as Florida slowly transitioned from a territory to statehood.
