It covers the historical context and legal responsibilities surrounding visitations, with particular emphasis on the duties and roles of the Archdeacon and the Clergy within the governance of the Church. The author takes the opportunity to address several ongoing debates, specifically regarding the sanctity of marriage, the proper use of Church property (including churchyards), and the education of the poor. The author argues persuasively that the sanctity of marriage must be preserved and that any alteration to the Church's doctrine on marriage would have a detrimental effect on society as a whole. He beseeches the clergy to continue their educational work and service to the community, despite the challenges that doing so in urban areas presented. Ultimately, this book is a valuable resource for understanding the role of the Archdeacon, the authority of the Church, and the on-going debates surrounding religious practice and duty in 19th century England.
