This book presents the collected minutes from the first Colonial conference held in 1887 by the British Colonial Office to discuss economic development, postal services, and telegraphic communication within the British Empire. The Colonial Office convened representatives from eighteen colonies, including Canada, and the four self-governing colonies of Australia, New Zealand, and Cape Town. The author highlights the main themes that emerged during the meetings, such as a plan for an Imperial penny postage and a potential submarine telegraph cable project between Great Britain, Canada, and Australasia. With a particular focus on debates over trade and postal expansion, this book offers unique insights into the political and economic landscape of the British Empire in the late 19th century.
