This book presents an exposà of the German army, its officers, and its feudal ideas, as told through the experiences of a young lieutenant in the prestigious Yellow Butteries regiment. The author relies on first-hand accounts and impartial witnesses to depict the stark contrast between the outward image of the German military and the brutal reality that lies beneath. The officers, obsessed with preserving their exclusive social status, maintain a rigid hierarchy and rigid code of conduct that has remained largely unchanged since the days of Emperor Nero, regarding themselves as vastly superior to enlisted men and civilians. The author explores the pernicious effects of militarism and its corrosive influence on the character of the officers, fostering arrogance, contempt, and a sense of impunity that often leads to horrific abuses of power. Ultimately, this book challenges the myth of the "first-class men" who lead the German army, revealing the deep-seated flaws and inherent dangers lurking beneath the surface of a supposedly elite military force.
