The authorâs task has been to show the leading thought and poetical structure of each Psalm. These Psalms have been chosen for their devotional use by the educated English reader and for such of the Clergy as are not afraid of reverent criticism. The Alphabetical Psalms are studied together so that their whole group of characteristics may be better appreciated. The author shows that, even in prose, I is used of the whole community or nation. He also examines the interchange of the Divine Names, the First Collection being Elohistic, the Second Jehovistic, and the Third again Elohistic, and suggests a reason for this. The authorâs belief that the Psalms, though not all Messianic, will all become in a certain sense a voice of Christ adds to the depth and interest of his commentary.
