The author begins by discussing the initial plan that started with the construction of the Tremont Street Subway in 1895 and was completed with the opening… of the Boylston Street Subway in 1914. Later, the plan extended further with the opening of the East Boston Tunnel in 1916. These successful endeavors set the stage for the next phase of construction and after several setbacks, the Dorchester Rapid Transit Company opened in 1929 as a high-speed trolley line which was later converted into a rapid transit line as part of the MTA in 1965. The book concludes with a detailed description of the ambitious Traffic Tunnel project begun in 1931 and still used by commuters today.
