The author details 4 cases, three of which were successful and one was a failure, while reflecting on the insights gained. The first case was a success with a man who had an arm wound leading to infection, which caused hemorrhaging in his arm. The second case was a 25-year-old man with a hand wound that became infected which also spread to his arm. The author used a heated iron to destroy the infection and then, when hemorrhaging occurred, tied off the brachial artery. The third case was also successful and involved a man with a leg wound that became infected. The author made an incision in the calf to reach the site of the infection, destroying it with an iron rod. When hemorrhaging occurred, the author tied off the femoral artery. The final case was not successful and resulted in the patient's death. The patient was a 27-year-old man with an inguinal abscess who had three hemorrhaging episodes before the author tied off his external iliac artery. Though the bleeding stopped, the patient died from typhus 10 days after the operation. The author's experiences demonstrate the potential benefits and risks of tying off blood vessels, insights that are still useful to surgeons today.
