This book presents a detailed look into the prosecution of Aulus Cluentius Habitus, an inhabitant of Larinum, who was accused of the poisoning of Statius Albius Oppianicus. The author presents arguments for Cluentius' innocence, arguing that Oppianicus was, in fact, a man of 'extraordinary wickedness and audacity' who had been justly condemned for a string of heinous crimes including poisoning his wife, brother, brother's wife and unborn child. Beyond the intricate details of the case, the book delves into themes of familial relationships, corruption, and justice in the Roman Republic. The author's analysis of the evidence demonstrates the shortcomings of the Roman justice system, which could be manipulated through witness tampering, and bribery, especially in the context of a society where public figures like Oppianicus exploited their power to evade justice. The book highlights the courage and determination of Cluentius, while also revealing the motivations of the corrupt Oppianicus and his allies. Through this case study, the author sheds light on the complex social and political landscape of the Roman Republic, where justice could be subverted by the wealthy and powerful.
