The author delves into the evolution of Lee's religious ideas, from their origins in English Shakerism to their eventual crystallization as the foundation of the Shaker movement in America. At the time, Lee's beliefs were audacious and compelling, emphasizing equality between sexes, communal living, and the rejection of traditional social structures. This book carefully examines the motivations behind these beliefs, establishing Lee as a pivotal figure in the history of religion.
