It challenges the romanticized image of the character ingrained in popular culture and explores the Cid's devastating role as a mercenary in the tumultuous 11th-century Spain. Challenging prior scholarship, the author argues that El Cid was not the heroic figure of Spanish folklore, but an amoral and ruthless warlord who fought for the highest bidder, leaving a trail of destruction and suffering in his wake. Based on extensive research, the book delves into the historical context of the period, the sources available on El Cid, and the literary evolution of the legend throughout the centuries. This meticulously researched book forces a critical re-examination of one of Spain's most iconic figures, providing scholars, history buffs, and anyone interested in medieval Spain with new and thought-provoking insights into the complex realities of the epoch. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
