Beginning with the colonial origins of Catholicism in the area and moving through the Civil War and the establishment of the diocese in 1924, the author traces the history of the Catholic community in Eastern North Carolina up to the time of writing. Special attention is given to Bishop Vincent S. Waters, the third and present Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh, who has led the Church in a period of great growth and expansion with missionary zeal and a commitment to establishing a parish in every county. The book provides historical and cultural context for understanding the role of the Catholic Church in the region and pays tribute to the contributions of the many people whose faith and dedication shaped its legacy.
