However, Sigismund's financial difficulties forced him to pawn Mulhouse to Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy in 1469. Under Burgundian rule, Mulhouse faced new challenges. The city's traditional autonomy was curtailed, and it was forced to contribute to the war effort against the Swiss Confederacy. The increasing financial burden and political oppression led to growing discontent among the citizens, who eventually revolted in 1474. The uprising was brutally suppressed by Charles the Bold, and Mulhouse was forced to pay a heavy price for its defiance. The documents in this book provide a rich and detailed account of these events, shedding light on the political, economic, and social forces that shaped the history of Mulhouse during this tumultuous period.
