Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the development of a new dwarf Sweet Pea variety, the Pink Cupid, from its origins as a mutation in a field of Blanche Berry Sweet Peas in California. At the time, only about a thousand seeds of the new variety existed and the author paid fifteen hundred dollars for exclusive ownership of them. The Pink Cupid is not merely a sport of the original White Cupid, but rather a distinct departure from its parent, the tall Blanche Ferry. In habit and manner of growth, it is strictly a Cupid, spreading outward from the root to between one and eighteen inches around, and growing six to eight inches high. From its base it will shoot up stems around six inches long, which bear three to four beautiful blossoms that are all borne close to the end of the stem when fully open. The standard of the flower is wide, and the wings are pure white or light pink. The substance of the flower is especially heavy, and the blossoms will appear fresh and vigorous in a glass of water long after their long-stemmed parent has wilted and died. The plant itself is vigorous and hardy, and will bloom very early, coming into bloom around the same time as White Cupid. Although blooming early, it continues to bloom until very late, bearing a profusion of blossoms so thickly packed as to completely cover the plant itself. It is unequaled as a bedding and annual border, as its color, fragrance, and compact size make it a rare novelty. It also is a beautiful pot plant, with eight or ten-inch pots being the right size for flowering. A large bed of Pink Cupid Sweet Peas was grown for seed the past summer, and a partial view of the bed has been engraved on the cover of this catalog, showing the remarkably free-blooming habit of the plants. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
