This book argues that the elective system is a more effective approach to engineering education than the required system, which has been the standard approach for many years. This system would only provide students an organized course of study, but also one with greater depth and comprehensiveness, countering the argument that it would result in a disorganized education. The author maintains that the elective system allows students to match their learning to their interests and strengths as it relates to their chosen field and within the broader context of real-world engineering. This system has been successfully implemented in the Mining School of Michigan, resulting in higher quality work from students, and is adaptable across various professional institutions. Overall, the elective system promotes deeper engagement and better educational outcomes, indicating it is the coming system of education.
