Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on preserving the Everglades region of southern Florida, USA, and how practices can be improved to best benefit its wildlife. The area is managed by various national and state agencies, and this book presents cooperative research between the three main agencies involved in this land management. The centerpiece of the region is Conservation Area 3A (CA3A) and much of the discussion centers on this area. The book provides historical information on the state of the Everglades as a whole, and CA3A specifically, with a particular focus on water levels and how they can be managed to best benefit the wildlife that lives there. This area was originally home to the indigenous Tequesta people for hundreds of years and was rarely visited by European colonizers or settlers until the mid-19th century. By the early 20th century, the area had been significantly altered by drainage projects intended to manage water levels for agricultural and flood control purposes. This book details the cyclical changes in water levels and their impact on the area's ecosystem. The authors present their findings on optimum water level conditions for 10 categories of wildlife and compare them to the current water management practices and resulting conditions. The authors conclude that the current regulation schedule does not provide the best conditions for all types of wildlife and recommend that the gauges at the higher elevations be incorporated into the three gauge stage average used to determine water levels.
