First published in the 18th century, this extensive guide delves into the governance of the city during a time of significant socio-economic growth and transformation. The author delves into the details of how the many laws and charters that formed the backbone of governance in London came to be, the reforms that shaped them, and the impact these had on the lives of citizens. The book explores the nuances of these statutes in great detail, through the lens of the context of the era in which they were developed. The author includes a detailed discussion of the rights and privileges of citizens, their wives, widows, orphans, and others, as well as the laws governing the administration and distribution of estates, actions, writs, attachments, and sequestrations. The book also examines the binding of apprentices, the taking out of freedoms, the selection of city officers, and the courts in the city, as regulated by the statutes of the day. A fascinating look into a specific time and place, this book offers precious glimpses into the development of the laws and customs that would come to shape the daily lives of citizens in this major European metropolis.
