The author provides a detailed account of the events leading up to and including the tumult, which was sparked by a tax on fruit. The uprising was led by a young fisherman named Masaniello and spread rapidly throughout the city, as the people rallied against Spanish rule and oppressive taxation. The author skillfully weaves together historical research and vivid descriptions to bring this tumultuous period to life. Through the exploration of this significant event, the book delves into broader themes of social inequality, political oppression, and the struggle for self-determination. It offers valuable insights into the dynamics of popular uprisings and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
