The author takes us through this period based on the records in Genesis, showing the historical context in which these stories are set. The ideas and themes of this era are explored, such as the transition from a God-conscious world into one of widespread ungodliness, violence, and corruption, all the while framed against a backdrop of a long-lived, patriarchic society. We learn about the state of the world and its descent into chaos as seen in the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, the long life spans of the patriarchs, the construction of the Tower of Babel, and the ultimate destruction of the world in a flood, before discussing the rise of the Chaldean and Egyptian empires. The book concludes with the story of Torah, Abraham's father, and his departure from Ur of the Chaldees to go into the land of Canaan. This thought-provoking book places the reader firmly in the time of the Old Testament's earliest stories, examining the origins of idolatry, human choices, and the consequences they carried, illuminating our understanding of the Bible and humanity's place within the grand scheme of its history.
