Cooke about Cooke's refusal to ordain a new priest, the Rev. Merritt Ashley, over concerns regarding orthodoxy and the interpretation of justification in the Book of Common Prayer. The dispute highlighted divisions among High and Low factions of the Episcopal Church and was the first time an ordination was halted for theological concerns since the 1811 General Convention. Their arguments about the relationship between faith, belief, and outward piety led to a local synod for unity and peace. This fascinating historical record reveals the central role of the doctrine of justification in the 19th century Episcopal Church.
