The author, an impartial critic of the ensuing governorship of Colonel Thomas Picton, provides numerous examples of torture, cruelty, and unlawful executions perpetrated by the British military against the inhabitants of the island, a significant proportion of whom were Roman Catholic. The author argues that Picton's actions violated fundamental principles of British justice and decency, and he presents evidence suggesting that these actions were approved, even encouraged, by many of Picton's superiors. The book's detailed and disturbing accounts provide important insights into the dark side of British imperial rule and the enduring legacy of colonialism in the region.
