The author notes that public structures like temples, theaters and government buildings have withstood the test of time while private residences have not, despite being made of equally durable materials. The author postulates this is because these buildings represent the best of each architectural style, often taking national pride into account and designed to withstand the ages as a testament to great leaders, advanced civilizations or religious importance. Once lost, these structures are rarely rebuilt, and their loss is a massive blow to our collective architectural knowledge. The author notes that construction of public buildings has remained consistent through the ages while private homes have changed dramatically and as a society, we should take this into account as we build cities of the future.
