The author provides historical context for the ordinances, which cover a wide range of topics including, the king's relationship with the church and the extent of the royal jurisdiction over ecclesiastical goods, the regulation and taxation of commercial activities, the reform of the judicial system, and the successive changes in the organization of royal revenues and the fiscal administration. The ordinances reveal the growing power of the monarchy, the central role of the king in French society, and the emergence of bureaucratic structures within the French state.
