This book grapples with the mid-19th century, Canadian religious and political landscape while chronicling the author's role within the secession of the Canadian Presbyterian Church from the Church of Scotland. The author, a Presbyterian minister, argues that independence is the Church's natural state and that any connection to the Church of Scotland or the state itself, is unjustified. He views this separation as a response to the betrayal of the Church's principles. The book argues that the act of separation can serve as a model for other churches and Christian communities. With themes of freedom, independence, and fidelity to religious conviction, the book provides insight into the connections between church and state and their potential effects on individuals and communities of faith.
